Flatiron was the prime contractor for the $148 million project, which includes 12 acres of wetland restoration and&nbsp;<\/span>improved access for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to several San Diego beach communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">The project received $138 million from the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/x4eYCW68lRSPAwNRHnKW-Y?domain=urldefense.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"2\">Federal Highway Administration<\/a><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">, including $80 million from&nbsp;the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/5pGuCXDM0RCqx7kVFmTh34?domain=urldefense.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"3\">Bipartisan Infrastructure Law<\/a><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">Construction began in 2018 to ease&nbsp;traffic congestion and improve transportation across the San Diego River.&nbsp;The project features:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\"><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">Restoration of 12 acres of wetlands along the San Diego River<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\"><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">Two parallel bridges with three lanes in each direction<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\"><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">Class I shared-use paths for pedestrians and bicycles<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\"><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">Roadway widening and improvements along nearby vital roadways and the I-8 off-ramp<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\"><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">Total demolition and removal of the old bridge<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_contentpasted0\">The previous structure was constructed in the early 1950s and declared obsolete to handle increased traffic volume by the California Department of Transportation.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The elegant,\u00a0new West Mission Bay Drive Bridge \u2014 designed to evoke stones skipping across water \u2014 is complete.
